Designing a Tranquil Home Haven

Discover how this family turned their home into a personal oasis.

The Big Idea

This family wanted their home to be equal parts welcoming, livable, and original. The idea was to craft a serene atmosphere, where every member could unwind and recharge, by incorporating elements that showcased their unique style. The design of their home prioritized warmth, comfort, and style.

We began in the family room. This room had very little natural light so we focused on layering elements to create cohesion while adding depth and a unique persona to the space. We included a wool celadon rug to create a moment of quiet color in the room.

Importance of Light

We added two window pane mirrors on each side of the television to bounce more light around the room. Lighting acts as a visual tool, highlighting design features, artwork, and decorative elements within a room. Creating light in a space that might have very little is a priority for our team.

For the fireplace wall, we brought in bright ceramic wall plates which added both color and texture to the space.

Throw Pillows are the Key

Incorporating new throw pillows on a couch is a simple yet effective way to enhance the visual appeal of a space while also adding an element of comfort and coziness. One of the key advantages of throw pillows is their ability to introduce color to a room. We added new pillows to this family’s existing sectional to pull a hue of green.

Functionality of Ottomans

This jute fabric ottoman serves a variety of functions in the family room. It can be used as a footrest, an extra seat, a coffee table, and even a display area for books and magazines. With its ability to adapt to different needs and spaces, an ottoman embodies functionality within a living area, adding convenience and practicality to the overall design.

The gallery wall of botanical prints was a striking way to add visual interest to an otherwise blank wall. These art pieces command attention while also bringing a wave of calm to the space.

This gorgeous wood console table is the perfect surface for displaying artisan accents rich with color, texture, and natural elements.

The family wanted a space to feature their piano and love of music. A cozy conversation area was created to compliment the family’s eclectic collection of art and musical instruments.

Creating a Fresh Look

We recovered existing swivel chairs in a burnt saffron woven fabric. Over time, even the most well-crafted and beloved furniture can show signs of wear and tear. Instead of parting ways with a cherished piece, reupholster it for a fresh look.

A soft linen blanket with vibrant colors compliments the reupholstered chairs.

The flooring was replaced with a bright, yet warm, cream patterned woven carpet.  This blended well with the adjacent foyer and dining room.

This organic art piece was hung on the wall behind the piano. A very modern light fixture was hung on the wall next to the piano to provide task lighting while someone is striking the keys. This smashing accent light is even dimmable for ambient lighting.

Bring on the Zen

A very calm and rich landscape painting was hung on the opposing wall over a vintage jade green cabinet. Even the elegant accent decor on the cabinet provides a sense of calm. Orchids are a beautiful way to bring zen into one’s space.

The family needed additional storage in their kitchen. This unique vintage cabinet was the perfect solution. Artwork with green accents ties into the adjacent living room, while the tall lamp balances out horizontal scale.

“This project focused mainly on family reading and playing music together which is such a wonderful inspiration. We also pulled the adjacent rooms together in terms of color and pattern so now it all looks cohesive and polished,” said Jane Marquard, co-owner and interior designer at Maison Maison.
