Learn Jane’s simple two questions to tackle discovering your design style.
I had an interview this afternoon with a magazine writer, while sitting at my desk up at the store, and she asked me about ‘trends and timeless design.’ Both interesting subjects that stump quite a few folks.
With thirty-seven years in the design business, I know that trends often drain your pockets and have a short shelf-life. Adhering to trends can bring instant gratification to updating a space within your home, but is it really worth it in the long run?
Instead of trying to conform the latest interior design trends when starting to makeover a space, ask yourself the two simple questions we ask all of our clients:
Most people don’t have answers until they give it some thought. Honestly answering these two questions can lead you to a beautiful and successful design project completion.
Struggling on how to find your individual and unique answers to these two questions? Do your homework. During the beginning of a design process, we’d assign our clients with the following task:
Look at Pinterest and compile pics of interiors that you love. Don’t over analyze why you love them, just save them to your file. You will see a pattern to develop in the pics you chose and will come face to face with the elements of your true design desires.
White and clean, moody and dark, or perhaps full of happy patterns and color. Think of this exercise as self realization — a way to get familiar with your own design style.
Without this mood board homework, you may spend a lot of time and money trying to put together a room with no road map and no real plan. Only using snippets of things you like and not seeing the big picture does not make a completed design.
Do some homework, just like the old days, and it will pay off. You will find your way to a home that makes you smile each and every time you walk into a room. Then, you can stop the madness of constantly looking for the “fix” to a home that might feel uncompleted.
Let us know how you do. And of course, if you need some help or a nudge, we are here to help. Give us a call or pop into the shop anytime.
